For a general idea of the local geography of the area see the Google Map page.

Goring-on-Thames, as implied by its name, is on the River Thames, nestling on the East bank of the river as it flows through what is known as the Goring Gap.

The Western Region Railway heads due North as it passes through Goring

This can be confusing for visitors or newcomers to the village as one instinctively thinks of the the river and the railway as heading due West from London.

But the Thames meanders in a generally Southerly direction as it passes through Oxford and onwards towards Reading.

Geographically and administratively, Goring is in South Oxfordshire, but it has a Reading, Berkshire post code; once again confusing for some.

On the other bank of the river from Goring lies our sister village of Streatley-on-Thames.

In some respects these are two entirely separate villages in two different counties with their own Churches, Schools and Parish Councils. In other respects, they act as one community, sharing amongst others the Bridge, Golf Club, Railway Station and local shops. Indeed many local organisation use the designation “Goring Gap” in order to encompass the two villages, for example the Goring Gap News and Goring Gap Business Network.

Some superb Ariel Views of the area can be seen on the Goring & District Twinning Association Website.
