History of GSSG

Following the Parish Planning process in Streatley it was suggested that a Sustainability Group should be formed to see how the village could be made sustainable. This was written into the Streatley Action Plan. Shortly following this a Sustainability group was formed in Streatley. Meanwhile the Goring Parish Plan also wanted to encourage Sustainability, particularly in the form of generating hydro-electricity from the River Thames. It was decided that these projects should be combined and the GSSG was developed from the two villages.

GSSG is a not-for-profit community organisation (applying for charitable status) working towards sustainable development. We are also developing a network of members to allow this initiative to grow at grass roots level to provide a local perspective in supporting, encouraging and stimulating the sharing of best practice.

Objectives of GSSG

We have two main objectives which are to:

  • Promote for the benefit of the parishes of Goring and Streatley, the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment [by promoting sustainability]

  • Advance the education of the communities of Goring and Streatley in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment through sustainable practices.

Our current major project is a hydro-electric power generating scheme at the weir of Goring and Streatley. There are ongoing smaller projects which the GSSG encourages members to get involved with on an ongoing basis.

Photo Montage (opposite) is the Goring Gap weir next to the lock-keeper’s house with two 3.6m diameter Archimedes Spirals producing up to 200KW of electricity.

This programme of events is constantly updated on the GSSG website and in a regular Email newsletter.
